For those of you that haven’t heard of Grind Time, or didn’t see our previous post on them, it’s The World’s #1 Rap Battle League started by emcee’s for emcee’s. I’ve been a huge fan of Grind Time, and a lot of the rappers involved for as long as I’ve known about the league, and certain battlers based on performances prior to the league’s formation. When I first heard about Battle Of LA 3, I knew I had to be there, and I waited impatiently for a few months till that day finally came. The event, better known as “BOLA 3” was held on New Years Eve at The Airliner, in Los Angeles, and I couldn’t think of a better way for me to have brought in 2010 than being at this event. It was my first time at a Grind Time event, and it was easily one of the funnest nights of my life, a jam packed night of entertainment from start to finish! Grind Time has single-handedly taken the battle scene to new heights, and I look forward to another big year from them. Much love to @LushOne, and everyone else involved in making this event happen! I hope they hold more events in Los Angeles, cause I will definitely be there every time!

Okwerdz gave us a shoutout in one of his video updates on his Youtube Channel and to my surprise he also gave a shoutout later in the night during a freestyle cypher he did during his set with Dizaster, Sahtyre, Cadalack Ron, etc when I decided to pull out the video camera. I’m a strong believer that “Mixtapes Are The New Albums“, and Laws – 4:57 PM definitely strengthens my feelings on that statement. This new mixtape from Laws has solid original production (which includes J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League, 9th Wonder, & DJ Khalil), great lyrics, dope hooks, and a variety of styles that blend together to make some great hip hop music. Laws is an extremely talented artist that has been paying his dues in hip hop, and is currently signed to J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League/Asylum/Warner Bros. I downloaded the cd when I saw him post it on a message board we both post at, and the last thing I expected to hear on it was the line below…..

I thought I was tripping when I first heard him say Karmaloop Codes on “Vintage Futuristic 2“, and didn’t wan’t to assume it was actually about the site, but it turns out, even Laws himself is a fan of the site! And for those wondering what the title 4:57 PM means, it represents the transition of quitting his regular job, and living a regular life to pursuing music full time. He would pack up and get ready to leave work at 4:57, and when he got signed, he no longer had time for a regular job, so he had to make a choice, and he chose music. He mentions it in this video.

Chester French was recently featured on KarmaloopTV. Their debut album “Love The Future” comes out April 21st, and if you are feeling these guys music then I would strongly suggest you pick up the album.  If you haven’t heard of them, you need to GET FAMILIAR! They have been building a pretty strong buzz off their hit song “She Loves Everybody“, and they are signed to Pharrell’s label Star Trak Entertainment.  I first heard the song a couple years ago when it was played on Entourage, and I found the song online, and loved it. Then recently, to my surprise I saw a thread on a forum that was discussing their free mixtape they just put out with Clinton Sparks titled “Jacques Jams Vol. 1: Endurance“. The mixtape features Pharrell, Common, P. Diddy, Jermaine Durpri, Bun B, Pusha T, Jadakiss, and more. I really enjoyed the mixtape, and would highly recommend downloading it, it’s free, you’ve got nothing to lose! Their music isn’t normally the type I listen to, but I am really enjoying their stuff, especially the Hip Hop collabs. Eminem’s new single “We Made You” produced by Dr. Dre finally came out, and you can see 50 Cent rocking a shirt from T.I.T.S. in the music video. The song is getting mixed reactions, but I feel it’s what you should have expected from a first single for Eminem. So if you were let down by it, then you gave yourself the wrong expectations before even hearing it. The song is great for it’s purpose, it’s catchy and funny, and will have people talking about it like any other Em single. It’s not a song you’re supposed to take serious, and it’s not what we should be expecting from the rest of the album (hopefully). His upcoming album Relapse, is set to hit stores May 19. If you haven’t heard of Drake yet, you’ll hear about him sooner or later. He’s a relatively new artist, that can rap, and sing. I think he does them both pretty well, and will only get better the more he keeps making music. Drake is signed to Lil Wayne’s label “Young Money Entertainment”. He’s also an actor, he played the character Jimmy, in the show Degrassi. I recommend getting his official mixtapes “Room For Improvement”, “Comeback Season”, and his latest “So Far Gone” which was very well put together especially for a mixtape.
